Sizing for Sandals and Other Footwear

Shopping online for sandals and other types of footwear has become increasingly popular – but still some could express concerns such as, “How on earth will I know if I have the right size?” and “Will it cost me more time and money than its worth in exchanges and shipping?”

A number of online merchants these days are making it quite easy to purchase shoes online.  With their free shipping and free returns policies, even if the wrong size is ordered it can be exchanged or returned quite easily (and most often with no extra cost).

Even with merchants providing exceptional service along these lines, the fact remains that it is easier to order the right size in the first place.  With that in mind, here is a handy guide to find out exactly what your size is (regardless of what size of shoes you might normally wear in specific brands):

Measurements for Women and Men (Have a friend there to help you):

Step 1:  Trace your foot

Standing upright, place your bare foot on a piece of paper or thin cardboard material – making sure to be standing on a hard and smooth floor surface.  A second person should trace around the foot while holding the pencil perpendicular to the paper and while tracing, moving around the foot snugly.  (Note:  If you will be wearing socks with the shoes, wear a sock while tracing.)

Step 2:  Get the measurements from the traced foot

Length:  Using an inches tape measure or ruler, measure the traced foot from the very top to the bottom.

Width:  Measure the widest points of the foot to get the width.

Adjust the measurements:  The width of the pencil will create a slight inaccuracy in both height and width.  To compensate for this, subtract 1/8″ from both the height and width numbers to get the most accurate numbers.

Final notes:

An important note – and a tip:

Different makers of sandals and other footwear have their own unique designs – and often this can translate into a bit of difference in their sizing.  If you have any question on whether your size will match up to a specific brand and style of sandal, make sure to check any reviews, which will report the percentage of those who say the shoe fits true to size – or perhaps fits a bit small or large.  (When this information is readily available when publishing information on any given sandal, we will provide it for you in our listings.)

Remember:  Even if you receive your sandals and they don’t fit quite right – remember that most online shoe merchants offer helpful return and exchange service with no charge.
